Keyboard shortcuts are available for many operations (not just in the menu). The menu contains additional features and is normally hidden but can be displayed with Alt. The layout (displayed panes) can be selected, including the Details pane and the Preview pane. Additionally, there's the entire address-bar dropdown list, although I don't find that especially useful, and the Back and Forward buttons, which can be very handy. By the way, Recent Items on the Start Menu can be opened in Explorer, again I find sorting in descending order by modification date very useful. In Windows 7, the Details view needs to be displayed in order to select sorting in descending order by modification date, which yields very quick access to recent folders. Under Favorites, I frequently use Recent Places. The Windows Search box at the top right applies to the current folder and subfolders (the full power of Windows Search is available, and has automatic GUI assistance). I have seen it jump to the wrong place, it looks to me like an issue with updating Computer or Network entries late, causing the list to jump. Win7 displays things in the left pane correctly 95% of the time. The quickest way to use Explorer is generally to use Favorites (which can include favorite Searches) and Libraries in the left pane. Many apps support jump lists of recent files. #47 promytius, #69 Lothar, #77 mike, there are numerous ways to do things in Win7.
